Best places to visit in Pushkar

Pushkar Lake is one of the holiest lakes in Hinduism — a sacred pushkar (lotus lake) created by a petal dropped by Lord Brahma, surrounded by 52 bathing ghats and 400 temples. Savitri Temple is a hilltop shrine dedicated to Goddess Savitri (Brahma's consort) overlooking Pushkar Lake from a 600-metre peak — reached by 1.5 km of stairs or a ropeway. According to legend, the angry Savitri cursed Brahma and retreated to this hill. The temple offers the finest bird's-eye view of Pushkar's ghats, lake, and the surrounding Aravalli hills. Man Mahal Palace is a magnificent 16th-century royal guest house built on the shores of Pushkar Lake by Raja Man Singh I of Amber (Jaipur) for royal pilgrims. Now converted into the RTDC Heritage Hotel and one of the most atmospheric heritage accommodation options in Pushkar, its lakeside setting and rooftop views of Pushkar Lake and the surrounding ghats are outstanding. Rangji Temple is one of Pushkar's largest and most architecturally striking temples — a unique South Indian Dravidian-style temple built by a Marwari merchant in 1823, dedicated to Lord Rangji (a form of Vishnu) and entirely out of place among Pushkar's otherwise Rajput temple architecture. Its soaring gopuram, sacred tank, and Maratha-era gold plating on the inner sanctum make it remarkable. The Rath Yatra (chariot procession) during Rajasthan's Holi festival here is spectacular.

Varaha Temple in Pushkar is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) avatar — one of the largest and oldest temples in Pushkar, built in the 12th century and repeatedly renovated after Mughal destruction by Emperor Aurangzeb. The temple features a magnificent idol of Varaha (the boar who rescued Earth from the cosmic ocean) and is a top Vaishnava pilgrimage site in Rajasthan. An important stop on the Pushkar pilgrimage circuit alongside the Brahma Temple and Pushkar Lake ghats.

Pushkar Bazaar is one of Rajasthan's most vibrant and atmospheric markets — a colourful pedestrian street lined with stalls selling silver jewellery, tie-dye fabrics, Rajasthani puppets, glass bangles, camel leather goods, Pushkar pink salt, and the legendary rose products (Pushkar is India's rose water capital). One of India's top bazaar shopping experiences for travellers. The bazaar is particularly lively during Pushkar Camel Fair week. Bargaining strongly recommended.
