Gangotri, situated at 3,100 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the site of the Gangotri Temple dedicated to the River Goddess Ganga and the starting point for the trek to Gaumukh — the actual glacial source of the holy Ganges River. One of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Gangotri is believed to be the place where the sage Bhagirath meditated for thousands of years to bring the divine river Ganga to earth. The dramatic setting amid soaring Himalayan peaks, including the magnificent Bhagirathi group visible from the temple, makes Gangotri as visually awe-inspiring as it is spiritually significant.
Gangotri Temple at 3,415 m is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites — the origin point of the Ganges (Bhagirathi) River in Uttarakhand. The white stone temple, built by Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, enshrines a sacred rock marking where Goddess Ganga descended to earth. Glacial Bhagirathi waters flow past its steps. Open May to November (Diwali). A spiritually profound and scenically magnificent Himalayan destination in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Gaumukh Glacier, 18 km from Gangotri at 4,023 m, is the primary source of the Ganges River — the snout of the Gangotri glacier shaped like a cow's mouth (gau = cow, mukh = mouth). One of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas and a top Uttarakhand trekking destination, the trail passes through Chirbasa and Bhojbasa meadows amid towering granite peaks. Overnight camping at Bhojbasa before the final ascent to Gaumukh is the classic trek itinerary. Permits required.
Surya Kund is a powerful natural rapid and sacred pool near Gangotri temple where the Bhagirathi River crashes through a narrow gorge with tremendous force — creating one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in the Gangotri valley. The kund is surrounded by ancient temples dedicated to Sun God and other deities, and is a sacred bathing spot for pilgrims completing the Gangotri Char Dham yatra. Its roaring waters and the pristine Himalayan setting make it an unforgettable Gangotri attraction.
Pandava Gufa is an ancient meditation cave near Gangotri, 1.5 km from the temple on the Gaumukh trail, believed to be the place where the five Pandavas meditated during their journey to heaven (Svargaarohini). A sacred Himalayan hermitage cave with mythological significance, it is a short detour from the main Gaumukh trekking trail and a popular spot for spiritual seekers, yoga practitioners, and pilgrims seeking a moment of cave meditation on their Gangotri Char Dham pilgrimage.
Bhojbasa is the high-altitude meadow and camping stop at 3,792 m on the Gangotri–Gaumukh trek — named for the Bhojpatra (birch tree) forest that once covered these slopes. With breathtaking views of the Bhagirathi peaks and the Gangotri glacier tongue, it is the final overnight halt before reaching Gaumukh. The GMVN eco-camp and a small Lal Baba Ashram provide basic accommodation. Camping under the stars here amid the glacial silence is one of Uttarakhand's most memorable experiences.
