Gangotri Temple at 3,415 m is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites — the origin point of the Ganges (Bhagirathi) River in Uttarakhand. The white stone temple, built by Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, enshrines a sacred rock marking where Goddess Ganga descended to earth. Glacial Bhagirathi waters flow past its steps. Open May to November (Diwali). A spiritually profound and scenically magnificent Himalayan destination in the Garhwal Himalayas.
