Vaishno Devi, one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, is a sacred cave shrine nestled in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir at an altitude of 1,560 meters, dedicated to the manifestation of the Mother Goddess (Shakti). The 13-kilometer pilgrimage trek from Katra through pine forests and mountain terrain to the holy cave, where the goddess is worshipped in the form of three natural rock formations (pindies), is undertaken by millions of devotees annually. The journey is as much about spiritual dedication as it is about the beauty of the Himalayan landscape through which the pilgrimage route winds.
6–8 hours (round trip)
Embark on the iconic 12-kilometre pilgrimage trek from Katra base camp to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi — one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of India. The trail climbs through mountains, passing checkpoints, langar stalls, and panoramic viewpoints that keep pilgrims energized throughout.
1–2 hours
Enter the sanctum sanctorum of the cave temple to seek blessings from the three natural rock formations — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati — known as the Pindies. The spiritual energy inside the cave is something every visitor describes as deeply moving and transformative.
30–45 minutes
Break your Vaishno Devi trek at the Ardh Kuwari cave midway, where legend says the goddess meditated for nine months inside a narrow rock crevice. Crawling through the tight passage of Garbh Joon cave is considered a purifying experience and is a must-do on the pilgrimage route.
2–3 hours (additional)
After completing the main darshan, climb an additional 2.5 km to the Bhairavnath Temple perched at 2,300 metres. It is believed that a Vaishno Devi yatra is incomplete without visiting this temple, and the panoramic views of the Trikuta Mountains from here are absolutely stunning.
1–2 hours
Wind down your pilgrimage with a stroll through Katra's vibrant bazaar selling Kashmiri handicrafts, dry fruits, religious souvenirs, and local street food. The town buzzes with pilgrims from across India, making it a beautiful melting pot of cultures, languages, and devotion.
