Elephant Falls is Shillong's most famous waterfall — a three-tiered cascade 12 km from the city centre, named by the British for a rock shaped like an elephant (destroyed in an 1897 earthquake). The falls descend through dense subtropical forest in three dramatically different stages. One of the most visited Meghalaya tourist places and a top Shillong sightseeing attraction on every Northeast India itinerary. Most impressive June to September when the monsoon swells the flow spectacularly.
