Jammu and Kashmir, India
2–4 hours
Doodhpathri, meaning 'Valley of Milk', is named after the milk-white Doodhganga streams that flow through its vast, flat alpine meadows — and walking barefoot through these cold, crystal-clear streams across flower-carpeted grasslands is one of the most blissfully peaceful experiences in all of Kashmir. The meadow is 8,957 feet above sea level and ringed by pine forests and distant snow peaks, creating a pastoral paradise that is almost entirely free of commercialisation.
1–3 hours
Exploring the vast, open meadows of Doodhpathri on horseback is the most traditional and immersive way to experience this untouched Kashmir valley. Local Gujjar horsemen guide visitors on sure-footed mountain horses across the rolling grasslands, through shallow streams, and into the bordering pine forests. It's a genuinely romantic, old-world experience that feels a world away from the crowded tourist spots of Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
Full day
The trek from Doodhpathri to Tosa Maidan is a moderate one-day trail through some of the most hauntingly beautiful highland meadows in Kashmir. Tosa Maidan is an enormous plateau meadow at over 10,000 feet and the views from its open expanse across the Great Himalayan Range are exceptional. This route passes through several seasonal Gujjar shepherd encampments where you can share a cup of kehwa (Kashmiri green tea) with nomadic herders living by ancient seasonal traditions.
