Alibaug, a coastal town in Maharashtra's Raigad district just 100 kilometers south of Mumbai and accessible by a scenic ferry ride from the Gateway of India, is the preferred beach escape for Mumbaikars and is increasingly popular for its luxury beach resorts, water sports, and historic Maratha coastal forts. The Kulaba Fort rising dramatically from the sea near Alibaug beach, the beautiful Kashid Beach, and the forested hillsides of the Konkan coastline make Alibaug a scenic destination beyond its role as a city escape. The region's fresh seafood, particularly the Alibag seafood thali, and the lush Konkan landscape in monsoon make Alibaug particularly enchanting from June to September.
2–3 hours (including walk)
Kolaba Fort rising from the sea just 2 km from Alibaug beach is one of Maharashtra's most photogenic Maratha-era fortifications — and the only sea fort in the Konkan that you can actually walk to on foot at low tide. The 30-minute causeway walk across the wet sand to the fort, flanked by the open Arabian Sea on both sides, is an experience that feels genuinely adventurous. Inside the fort, cannons, temples, and ancient wells reveal the ingenuity of the Maratha naval empire.
Ferry: 50 minutes each way; Beach: as long as you like
The fastest and most enjoyable way to reach Alibaug from Mumbai is the ferry crossing from Gateway of India to Mandwa Jetty — a 50-minute ride across Mumbai Harbour that offers spectacular views of the city skyline, Elephanta Island, and the naval yards. The ferry experience itself is a highlight: warm sea breeze, wheeling gulls, and the magical transition from urban Mumbai to the laid-back Konkan coast within the span of a single coffee. Alibaug's relatively clean, black-sand beach awaits on the other side.
1–2 hours
Alibaug beach hosts a thriving water sports scene between October and March — banana boat rides, jet skiing, parasailing, and kayaking are all available through licensed operators along the main stretch. It's not the wild open ocean (the beach is sheltered within Mumbai Harbour approaches) which makes conditions ideal for beginners. Families with kids find the banana boat and speed boat rides particularly popular.
2–3 hours
Alibaug's coastal roads linking Varsoli, Nagaon, and Kashid beaches are flat, relatively traffic-free, and lined with coconut groves, mango orchards, and sea views — making them some of the most pleasant cycling routes in Maharashtra. Renting cycles in Alibaug town and pedalling down to Nagaon Beach (7 km) for a swim before cycling back is a perfect half-day activity that most travellers overlook in favour of the main beach.
