Varadaraja Perumal Temple is one of the 108 sacred Divya Desam Vishnu temples — a magnificent 11th-century Kanchipuram temple noted for its 100-pillar hall with exquisitely carved monolithic columns and the sacred lizard sculptures (touching them believed to grant moksha). A UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site and one of the most important Vaishnavite shrines in South India. The processional deity is submerged in a sacred tank for 40 years and revealed for public darshan every 40 years.
